The 2025 Formula 1 season marks a pivotal year in motorsport, introducing a series of technical and sporting regulation changes aimed at enhancing competition and driver safety. As the United States Grand Prix approaches, understanding these updates is crucial for fans and teams alike.

Technical Regulation Changes

Adjustments to DRS Parameters

The Drag Reduction System (DRS) has undergone modifications to improve overtaking opportunities. The minimum slot gap has been reduced from 10mm to 9.4mm, while the maximum remains at 85mm. Additionally, stricter deflection tests for rear wings are now in place to ensure compliance with aerodynamic standards.

Implementation of Driver Cooling Systems

In response to extreme heat conditions experienced in previous seasons, the FIA has mandated the use of driver cooling systems when temperatures exceed 30.5°C. These systems aim to prevent heat-related health issues, with a corresponding increase in the car’s minimum weight to accommodate the equipment. 

Sporting Regulation Updates

Elimination of Fastest Lap Point

The additional point awarded for the fastest lap has been removed for the 2025 season. This change aims to discourage teams from making late-race pit stops solely to secure this point, promoting more strategic consistency throughout races.

Increased Rookie Participation

Teams are now required to field rookie drivers in at least two free practice sessions per season, doubling the previous mandate. This initiative provides emerging talent with greater exposure and experience at the highest level of motorsport. 

Revised Testing Regulations

Testing of previous cars (TPC) is now limited to 20 days per year, with a maximum of 1,000 km over four days for current drivers. Testing is restricted to circuits featured on the current or previous year’s calendar, excluding tracks scheduled to host a race within 60 days of the test.
